LEGISLATIVE ALERT !!!
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY PROTECTION ACT [H.R.1691]
HEADED FOR A SENATE VOTE!!!
October 14, 1999
The U.S. Senate is expected
to vote very soon on H.R.
1691, the Religious Liberty Protection Act. This urgently needed measure
passed the House of Representatives by a 3-1 margin, but is threatened
by liberals who want to carve out an exception for civil rights, as though
you can only protect civil rights by denying Americans the right to religious
freedom.
The Senate vote is expected
to be very close. Representatives of faith groups, including Seventh-day
Adventist leaders, will be meeting with Senator Feinstein's staff on October
22, and are attempting to set up a meeting with Senator Boxer, as well.
We need to put the pressure on these Senators as we go into these meetings.
The Religious Liberty Protection
Act is intended to provide basic protection for the free exercise of religion,
since the U.S. Supreme Court has sharply curtailed the scope of the First
Amendment's protection of religious freedom This bill is even more urgent
in light of a recent California Court of Appeals decision that follows
the U.S. Supreme Court's
Smith [peyote] decision. Now we lack meaningful protection for the
free exercise of religion under the California Constitution as well as
under the U.S. Constitution.
This is an extremely important
religious liberty bill!!!
WHAT TO DO NOW!
-
Write, fax, e.mail or call both Senators immediately. Urge them to support
H.R. 1691.
-
Distribute this alert as widely as possible.
-
Please forward this e.mail, and also copy it and pass it out in church.
-
Pray for the U.S. Senate, and for your Senators by name, that they'll do
the right thing.
